 For thousands of years, farmers have selected and cultivated plants that are best suited to their particular environment and needs. There are thousands of different olive cultivars (types) grown throughout the Mediterranean and the rest of the world and Italy alone has more than 700 olive cultivars each with a distinct character that gives a unique flavour to the oil it produces. Olive Oil is produced in more than 30 countries in the world and most will claim that theirs in superior to all others – usually without being able to say exactly why. Italy, however, can back up that claim: consistently the top in international competitions, the most cultivars grown, pre-eminent in its quality and with a wider spectrum of interesting styles and tastes than any other country. |
