There are thousands of different olive cultivars (types) grown throughout the Mediterranean and the rest of the world and Italy alone has more than 700 olive cultivars each with a distinct character that gives a unique flavour to the oil it produces. Olive Oil is produced in more than 30 countries in the world and most will claim that theirs in superior to all others – usually without being able to say exactly why. Italy, however, can back up that claim: consistently the top in international competitions, the most cultivars grown, pre-eminent in its quality and with a wider spectrum of interesting styles and tastes than any other country. |
